Business contents insurance for freelancers

Protect the equipment you need to do your job. Many freelancers don’t have the cash to replace their equipment if it suffers accidental damage or is stolen. With business contents insurance you’ll be able to buy new tools, keep working on that project and hit that deadline.

What is business contents insurance?

A freelancer can’t work without their tools. If your computer suffered accidental damage or was stolen, would you be able to afford a new one? Our customers insure an average of £5,000 worth of work equipment. Instead of dipping into their capital, they can rely on their insurance to replace their tools.

Do I need business contents insurance?

Contents insurance is our most used product in terms of claims so it is fairly common for equipment to get lost, damaged or stolen. It’s not unusual for home insurance policies to exclude equipment used for business. This is just one of the reasons why it’s important to have a separate policy specifically for your work tools.

There are other differences between business contents and home contents policies. For example, the policy we arrange at With Jack includes worldwide cover and will pay for data recovery costs if you accidentally damage a hard drive and lose important work. Business contents claims tend to be paid out quicker because you’re dependent on that equipment to deliver your work on time.

What business contents insurance covers…

Accidental damage

Cracked monitor? Spilled liquid? Accidents happen.

Worldwide coverage

Portable equipment will be insured when travelling abroad.

Theft and accidental loss

Quickly replace stolen equipment so you can get back to work.

How does the contents insurance work?

Most of the claims we deal with are due to lost, stolen or damaged equipment. Let’s look at what you can expect if you make a claim:

  • It’s a cash payout minus the policy excess. It’s up to you if you use the cash to repair the item or replace it with something new
  • The insurer doesn’t provide replacement equipment, but if you’re really stuck and have a deadline looming then get in touch and we’ll see what we can do
  • For accidental damage claims you’ll need a repair estimate
  • For theft claims you’ll need a crime reference number
  • Claims under £10,000 won’t impact your renewal premium… unless you’ve made two claims within a 12 month period
  • Data recovery costs are also included under the contents policy, assuming the item has suffered accidental damage

How insurance helped this developer after a bike accident

When Simon had an accident on his bike and broke his laptop, he was worried about two things; will his insurance cover the damage and how quickly can he get back to work? Here’s how With Jack helped him.

I had an accidental damage claim to make. Ashley responded to me quickly with all of the information that I needed to make a claim. I followed her instructions and within 48 hours the matter was settled. The whole process was stress free and reassuring that there would be a resolution to the situation. It was really nice to know as someone who is self employed and making business decisions in isolation that I wasn't alone in sorting this out.
