Can I insure my equipment if I don’t have receipts?

Lots of freelancers buy kit second hand. Or maybe you’ve lost receipts after moving house or migrating to a new computer. This means you don’t have proof of purchase, which is typically a requirement for having your insurance claim paid out.

Don’t panic. If you’re a With Jack customer you can still claim on equipment you don’t have proof of purchase for. We just need to be pro-active with documenting ownership before a claim is made.

It’s not uncommon for freelancers to buy second hand kit, or maybe you purchased the contents years ago and have misplaced the receipt.

Given this is a frequently asked question, we asked the claims team what our customers can do in the event they wish to make a claim for kit they don’t have proof of purchase for. Their advice is this:

When you use With Jack to arrange your insurance but don’t have proof of purchase, take a timestamped photo of the equipment you’re insuring with either your business card or website loaded on a computer or phone. This will show your business was in possession of the kit when the policy was active.

There are two important parts to this.

  1. timestamped photo to indicate this was in your possession prior to the claim being made
  2. a branded card, website or anything else that shows it’s your business and not a random photo plucked from the internet

This does require a little bit of work, but given contents insurance is our most used product it’s a good idea to do what you can to make potential claims smooth sailing.

Remember, this is only applicable if you don’t have a receipt, bank transaction or anything else to show proof of purchase.

Generally speaking we find the insurer we work with co-operative. They want to help you get back to work quickly so will work with you to find solutions.

What value should you insure your second hand equipment for?

The policy wording does say the basis of repayment is as new at the date of loss assuming repair isn’t an option. However, this is on the basis you can provide proof of purchase. If you’ve bought kit second hand then please insure it at the current market value.
