Tips To Help You When Making A Claim

We’ve been helping a customer navigate the murky waters of making their first claim on their professional indemnity policy. They’d been worn down by a client and needed support from Jack and the insurer we placed their business with.

No problem, that’s why you’re paying for insurance.

Tips to help you when making a claim

Business insurance is new territory for many creatives, so making a claim can be uncharted territory.

Here are some basic steps to follow.

When Should I Make A Claim?

Firstly, you don’t have to wait until solicitors are knocking at your door to call on your insurer. In fact, at the first inkling you have of a situation gone awry you should alert your insurer.

If it’s a mistake you’ve made in your work that you think could give rise to a claim, notify your insurer.

If it’s a client expressing dissatisfaction with your work or refusing payment, alert your insurer.

At the very least they’ll be able to provide emotional support and put your mind at ease.

With our customer we mentioned in the opening paragraph, they had been threatened with legal action by their client. Whether it was an empty threat or not, the insurer was able to appoint a lawyer to help our customer communicate with their client going forward.

This is an important note; when something happens that you think could give rise to a claim, it’s important to consult your insurer immediately. The worst thing you can do is admit liability and get yourself in even more of a bind. Your insurer will outline the best course of action so you can avoid this.
